Permitted Distractions for Freelance Writers
For the most part, distractions and freelance writing do not go hand in hand. Distractions can generally slow you down and may make your writing less effective. There are times when distractions can be permitted, however, including the following cases.
Brainstorming session
Sometimes you write and write and write and you feel like you are in a rut. You may find yourself writing the same things over and over again. If you feel like you are having trouble with your writing, they you might want to stop and allow yourself to have some sort of brainstorming session. You can try to think of ways that you might spice up your writing or improve yourself such as learning new vocabulary.
The business of writing
Freelance writing is not all about the writing. You might need to deal with promoting your work, getting new clients, billing or other business related exercises. It is okay to do this instead of the writing at times.
Refreshing yourself
Sometimes freelance writers need a break. For instance, if you are starving, then your writing may not be as powerful. You may end up inadvertently injecting the names of different types of food into your work! It is okay to stop and take a break to get some sustenance if you need it. If you find that you are exhausted, then you might need a small nap. Also, if there is something that is really bothering you to the point that it is affecting your work, then it is okay to take a small break to get it over with. Of course, this should be the exception and not the rule – you should not need to stop ten times in an hour to take care of ten separate little things.
Emergencies
Of course if there is an emergency then this is a permitted distraction. Many freelance writers have other obligations. You might be a full-time parent or have elderly relatives. If someone needs you or if there is an urgent phone call, then of course you will need to focus on them and get back to your writing when you can. Of course even if it is not an emergency you may have other family obligations that you have no choice but to let distract you from your writing.
When you are writing, you should try to avoid distractions like the television, non-urgent phone calls, Interne surfing and more. The distractions explored above are some of the few that can make sense.
