Make sure to adhere to all of the directions on the particular blanket you get. It may have specifications about how long it can stay on, for instance. Read the directions and follow them.
Throw out any electric blanket that shows any sign of disrepair. According to the Fire Service website, you should look for the following signs of danger: patches that are damp, a soiled blanket, worn flex, connections that are loose, missing or damaged tie tapes, folding/creasing, elements that are exposed, scorch marks and any fabric that is frayed. If you ever smell any burning or see smoke, then discard of it immediately.
No matter how good the electric blanket seems, you should change it once a decade. Never buy this item used because you do not know if it is too old or has experienced any problems.
Never get an electric blanket wet. Don’t use one that is or try to dry it by activating it. Keep hot water bottles away from it.
Have the blankets flat while in use. If you ball it up and turn it on, a fire could occur. Store it safely so that it does not get damaged.
Heating blankets should not go under mattresses. They could go on fire.
Some electric blankets are made as an underblanket while some are made to be overblankets. Make sure to use it only as intended. Do not go on top of a blanket that is supposed to be over you because you could damage it and cause a hazard.
Find a model that automatically protects from overheating by sensing it and shutting it off. Although older models do not have this, the newer models do. It is an important safety feature and you should replace models that do not offer it.
If you are not using the electric blanket, turn it off. Unless you have one that is especially made for night use while you are sleeping, turn it off. Do not accidentally fall asleep with it on. You can unplug it for added safety. It is especially important not to plug it in somewhere where you control light so that it does not accidentally get turned on.
Do not use the electric blanket at the same time as a heating pad. Together, the two could cause a fire. Also, do not pile other things on it like pillows and dolls.
Avoid dry cleaning blankets. Clean as the directions indicate.
Heating blankets provide warmth and comfort, but they can also be dangerous. Do not let children use them without supervision and follow the above safety tips to safeguard yourself.
