Staying Calm with Baby Sleep Problems

(412 Words)
There are few things as distressing to new parents as the sound of their precious baby struggling to sleep. Parents want to soothe their child, and yet without verbal communication, they cannot always help their child get to sleep. No matter what, it is important to remain calm because your stress and anxiety will affect the baby, and possibly make it even more difficult for him or her to sleep. Different strategies can help parents keep calm.
Keep a good attitude
First and foremost, keep a good attitude about the situation. Realize that this is only temporary. Many babies struggle to sleep, but most will end up going into a more regular and comfortable sleep pattern as they age. Of course it is frustrating to watch your baby suffer, but remember that your baby is not staying awake on purpose. He or she may be as frustrated as you.
Use the time to consider how lucky you are to hold your baby. Look at your baby and marvel at the little miracle instead of worrying about sleep. You and the baby are both tired and sleep would be best, but try to look at the better side of a bad situation. You have a baby that will bring much happiness to your life.
Make good routines
Find some things you can do while trying to put your baby to sleep that will calm both you and him or her, even if he or she does not fall asleep. For instance, hold your baby while rocking in your favorite rocking chair. Find some relaxing music and put it on. You can also use that time to read to your baby or play with him or her. Find a comfortable place to be.
You should also try different techniques to sooth your baby. Perhaps baby massage will help. Maybe you can simply rock or nurse your baby. By finding techniques, you will be proactive, and that sense of accomplishment will help you keep calmer.
Take a break
Sometimes you just need a break. If you have a spouse, then take turns so that one of you can get some shut eye. You do not have to be on duty 24/7. Take a little time for yourself so that you can keep focused and be the best parent possible.
Caring for a baby that struggles to sleep is challenging, but typically temporary. With a good attitude, positive routines and much-needed breaks, you can stay calm.
