Taking Advantage of Free Library Programs

(420 Words)
Libraries around the country provide free programs for toddlers. Many of these programs are storytimes, and they may include the reading of stories, arts and crafts, music time and other activities. Sometimes these programs are with caregivers while other times they are for just the children. Both parents and toddlers can benefit from these free library programs.
Encourage a love of reading
Reading exposes a toddler to new worlds and allows him or her to use his or her imagination. Although most toddlers cannot yet read, they can still develop an interest in books by attending storytimes. Books can be used to teach a number of educational concepts from letters and numbers to potty training and sharing.
Great place to socialize
It is important for toddlers to socialize with other children. In addition, many parents feel isolated from others. Their friends may not have young children. Free library programs provide opportunities for socialization for both parent and child. Children can start to learn how to play with other kids. They will learn concepts such as sharing. Parents may find friends with children of the same age. If a parent makes the effort, he or she may be able to form strong relationships and make new friends for play dates and other events. They can also learn about other local events from other parents.
Children can start to learn how to listen and respond appropriately in a group situation
Many toddlers are accustomed to running around without needing to “pay attention” to anything. A library program introduces them to a setting where they have to pay attention and be respectful to someone else. This can set them up well for preschool and ultimately school. They can learn by modeling the behavior of the parents and older children.
It’s free!
With so many toddler programs costing $10, $20 or more a session, it is wonderful to have an activity that does not cost anything. New parents may be struggling with money and may not be able to afford the more costly programs. You pay for these free programs with your tax dollars; you might as well take advantage of them.
Ultimately, free library storyimes are wonderful simply because kids enjoy them. Toddlers can get out of the house and do something fun. They can use their imaginations. While you are at the library you can also read to your toddlers or take out some books. Look at the local libraries in your area to see what free programs are available near you.
