: The best and Worst Times to ask for a Raise
:
(411 Words)
It may not seem like there is ever a good time to ask for a raise, however some times are better than others. The following are some of the best – and worst – times to ask for a raise.
The best
Consider asking for a raise when the company is doing well. If things are going good, then the boss might not mind spreading some of the wealth around. For instance, if you work for a big sales company and the company has had a particularly great quarter, then it might be a good opportunity to ask for a raise.
You can also consider asking for a raise when you personally have done something very good. For instance, in the sales company, perhaps you made a great sale. Your boss might e feeling very good about you right now and might not mind rewarding you for your good work.
Also consider how busy your boss is when you are asking for a raise. Obviously you do not want to bother him or her with this if he or she is running around trying to do a million things. Pick a calm time. You can also consider the time of year. He might be more willing to do something if it is during the holidays, for instance. Also, think about the timing from your last raise. If it has been over a year then he or she might agree that you are due.
The worst
You might want to avoid asking for a raise if the company is going through hard times. Unfortunately, a lot of companies are having problems in this difficult economy and you might want to wait. If you have seen the company cut back in other ways such as if they have laid off people, then you might want to avoid asking for a raise. You do not want them to decide that you are not worth what they are already paying you and lay you off as well.
Do not pick a time when your boss is rushed or when he seems to be in a bad mood. Do not pick a time when you have done something wrong, especially if it was something that cost the company money.
There are good and bad times to ask for a raise, and sometimes when you do it will be the key as to whether your request is granted. Consider the above points when deciding when to approach your boss.
