Tips for Filling out an Employment Application
Your employment application may be the first thing that a potential employer sees. You want it to come across as professional as possible and put you forward in a way that is going to get you that interview. Consider the following tips.
Type it or make sure that it is legibly written
If you can, you should type your employment application. This will make it seem more professional and show extra effort. If that is not possible or convenient such as if you have to fill it out when you are there for your interview, then instead make sure to write it out very neatly. You want to make sure that they can read everything and do not have to strain their eyes.
Highlight your impressive attributes that are pertinent for the job
They usually have a job experience section of the application. If you are going for an executive job in a field you have been in for the last thirty years, then they probably don’t need to know about the paper route you had as a high schooler. What will be impressive to one company will be different than what will be impressive to another. You want to place things that will show that you can do a good job at that particular position. If there is a special skills section, then make sure to include everything that could make them think you would be good at the job.
Make sure you have all of the pertinent information beforehand
You are often asked to give very specific information about your schooling and experience on an employment application including dates, phone numbers, addresses, etc. You do not want to be writing question marks in your employment application because you do not remember. Make sure that you have all of the information with you.
Read through it to check for typos
You do not want to hand in an employment application filled with a lot of typos. If you are not positive on how to spell a word, then look in the dictionary or pick a different word. Make sure that the grammar is correct and that everything reads well, makes sense and is not confusing.
An employment application can dictate whether you have a real chance at the job or not. Some companies will use this to make the decision of whom to interview so it is vital that it is the best it can be. Consider the above tips when filling it out.
