Tips for when Adult Children Live in the Home
(403 Words)
It is not uncommon to have adult children living in their parents’ homes. The economy has created a situation where this is often best for one or both parties, either on a temporary or permanent basis. There are a number of considerations when adult children are living in a home. The more everything is planned and thought out in advance, the easier this will be.
First, you want to make sure that everyone has their own space. Try to decide in advance where everyone should be and create the necessary boundaries. For instance, if someone has a room that they don’t want anyone else to touch, then that should be respected. It is easier when you give everyone their own space so that no one feels like anyone is intruding.
It is also important that everyone is respectful of others. For instance, people should be quiet when others are sleeping. Also, it is important to have rules of the house that must be followed by everyone. Everyone should clean up after themselves. There may be specific rules that are for your home.
You should decide on the tasks that everyone is responsible for in advance. You do not want one person taking up all the slack and doing all the extra work. For instance, just because you used to do your children’s laundry when they were younger does not mean that you are going to do it now that they are adults. Everyone should chip in with the housework, especially since it will be more work with so many people in the household. Everyone can have their own specific jobs or you can rotate jobs according to a schedule.
You should set up weekly, or otherwise regular, meetings where people can discuss any issues that are coming up. Small issues can turn into much longer ones if left to fester, and you want to keep the lines of communication open. Everyone should get a chance to talk during these meetings.
There may be a room or something else that everyone wants to use at the same time. Make a schedule so that it is fair. For instance, if everyone wants to watch a different television show, then create a schedule so that everyone will get a turn.
It can work out very well to have adult children living in the home. Proper planning and good communication can make this a more positive experience.
