You can utilize both pictures and writing to explain this, the complexity of which will depend on the age and skills of the children. Step one can be decide what you want to achieve in the short or long run. Children can write out a lot of different goals and try to consolidate them into clear statements. You can put up a checklist for the attributes of the goals. For instance, they should be attainable, realistic, important, clear, etc. You can also show a story of a child making goals in this manner with his words in bubbles.
You can then show pictures of the children writing out their goals. Show how they can break a large goal into smaller steps and set a time frame for these. You can include sample sheets and forms that someone may use to keep track of their goals. Also, discuss how goals can be flexible so that one can change as needed. Also, write about how kids can keep themselves motivated as they set out to achieve their goals. They can create rewards for themselves. They can get a goal-making buddy.
Discuss the types of goals

Make it a board about the children’s actual goals
You can utilize the bulletin board to allow the children to actually set their own goals. Have each child write out goals that they have (or write what they tell you if they are young). You can then post these up on the board. As the children make steps towards these goals you can keep track on the board through stickers, stamps, ribbons or other awards. When you are done with the board, then give them their sheets so that they can take it home to continue.
It is important for kids to learn how to set goals. Utilize a bulletin board in the above ways to share this skill with your students.
