Playground injuries are far too common, but many of them are preventable. The following tips may help you prevent a tragedy.
Check for hot surfaces
Many people do not think of a playground as a place that you can get a burn, but you absolutely can if you are not careful. The metal pieces that are heating in the hot sun can become hot enough to actually cause burns in children. Before letting your children play, be sure to feel for excessive temperatures.
Check the playground equipment for disrepair
A lot of times, playground equipment gets older and something may start to come apart. Before your children play, you should inspect it. Look for anything dangerous like rusty nails or broken wood.
Make sure that your children go to an age appropriate playground
Some playgrounds are specifically meant for older children. A younger child may not be able to navigate safely and may fall. Sometimes they will list the ages on a sign. Also, some playgrounds are just safer than others. They may not be as high or have less areas where a child can fall. They may have a softer surface. You may choose those t reduce the chance of an injury.
Spot younger children
If your child is very young or if you are at all concerned about the playground, then you can stay right near your child. For instance, if there is a drop and you are worried that your toddler might just toddle off of it, then stay behind him or her. Make sure to pay close attention because an accident can happen quickly.
Make sure that the children are using the playground equipment correctly
A playground is not a free-for-all, but that is how many children will treat it. There are certain areas that are meant to be climbed and certain areas that are not. You should supervise your children while they are on the equipment. Also make sure that they are not rough-housing so much that one of them accidently falls and gets injured.
Playground injuries can and do occur, and you do not want them to happen to your family. If you are worried about scratches then you can cover your child in clothing (i.e. pants instead of shorts) although make sure that they do not overheat. Also make sure to bring enough water and to put sunscreen on them if they are going to be in the sun for a long time. These and the above tips will help you avoid playground injuries.
