What to do when Work Conflicts with your Kids Schedules

Balancing family life and work can be quite a challenge. It is especially difficult when work conflicts with your kids’ schedules. There are many different strategies that can help you deal with such a situation.
Adjust your work schedule
If you do not feel that it will affect your job, you may be able to adjust your work schedule so that you can accommodate your children. Oftentimes this is not as difficult as it seems. For instance, if the workers in your business work different shifts, then you may be able to switch with a co-worker. You may be able to work late a different day so that you have the time free when you need it. If you have a specific project due, then you can try to do it early. Take whatever steps possible to see if you can make your schedules work together.
Change your children’s schedules
You may also be able to adjust your kids’ schedules. For instance, if they are in tennis lessons on Tuesdays, but you often have to work late on that day, then you can see if you can change their lessons to a different day of the week. You can make events and plans for when you know that you are more likely to be free. You may not be able to accommodate everything, but smart planning may help you minimize conflicts.
Attain help
You may have to have others help you out when your work and kids’ schedules conflict. This assistance may be in either area. For instance, you may be able to have a co-worker cover for you so that you can attend your child’s function. You may be able to help each other so that when conflicts arise you are okay.
You may also be able to have someone step in for you with your kids. If it is simply a matter of shuttling your kids somewhere, then you may be able to get a family member, friend or babysitter to do that. If it is a matter of attending an event, then you may have the other parent or another family member fill in. Although it may not be the same as you, it will be better than nothing.
Explain to your kids
Sometimes conflict is inevitable. You may simply have to explain to your children that you have to work. It may be difficult for them to understand, but it is how you support the family.
Ultimately, if conflicts are often, you may need to make a decision about one of the schedules. People make the decision to change jobs because they do not provide enough time for them to be with their children. Otherwise, utilize the above strategies to help when conflicts arise.
