Tips for Students to Save Money
(442 Words)
Many students are struggling in the difficult economy and would like to save money any way they can. There are a variety of techniques that a student can use to save.
Save on textbooks
Students can save money on their textbooks by purchasing them from less expensive places. The campus bookstore is often the most expensive place from which to buy books, and the Internet can often save you half the cost or more. Also, buy textbooks used instead of new. When you have finished with them, sell them back.
Consider whether you need a car
A car can be convenient for a student, but it can also be extremely expensive. If you are a high school or college student, then consider whether you really need a car. If you can avoid it, not only will you save the cost of the car, but you can save on insurance (which is very expensive for young people) as well as gas, maintenance and the other costs of a car. Public transportation is typically much cheaper.
Look for scholarships
Many students are eligible for scholarships, which can save them a great deal of money. You may be able to work for the school in some sort of assistantship to save as well.
Save money on school supplies
No matter what level of school you are in, you are likely paying a great deal of money for the supplies you need for school. There are quite a few money-saving techniques that you can employ when buying these supplies. Look for sales. Near when school is about to begin, some stores will have “doorbusters” that may even be sold at a loss on items such as pencils, pens, notebooks, etc. Stock up when you see these for very cheap. These items will also often go on clearance after school has began so you can buy then. You should price compare between different stores when purchasing the items you need for school. Also, if you will be purchasing a computer for school, do not spend a ton of money on the most expensive machine out there. By going a little lower, you will probably get a great machine that will meet your educational needs but be cheaper.
Get a roommate
If you are in college, you can save a lot of money if you share the cost of living expenses. Not only can you save on rent, but you may be able to split the cost of other items such as a television, microwave, etc.
Students spend a lot of money over a wide range of categories. The above techniques can help you save while in school.
