Tips to Reduce Food Spoilage

You take the glass of milk to your lips, ready to taste that creamy drink, only when you taste it you know that something is most definitely wrong. The milk is spoiled. Unfortunately, most people have food spoil on them at times, but there are things that you can do in order to prolong how long your food stays useable. Consider the following ideas.
Keep food in the refrigerator
Some foods like fruit do not usually have to go into the refrigerator. If you choose to put it in, however, it may last a lot longer. This may be especially true for a food like bread, which tends to get moldy very quickly when left at room temperature. Of course, you will have to take into account that it will be cold when you eat it, but you can heat it up with a toaster, oven, stove or microwave. Also, for food that needs to be in refrigerator but that you take out to use such as a carton of milk, try to put it back in as soon as possible.
Use your refrigerator wisely
Be careful about putting something that spoils easily like meat or milk in the door of the refrigerator so that it is more often exposed to room temperature air. Try not to keep your refrigerator door open, and if you lose power try not to open it at all until you know you are getting the power back soon. If you put in something that is extremely hot like leftovers try not to put it near something that will spoil very easily. Make sure that your door is fully closed and that the fridge is set to the correct temperature.
Place items in airtight bags or containers
You can often have food stay better by using airtight containers and bags. This can serve a dual purpose in keeping bugs out.
Look closely at the food when you buy it
Try to get the best dates possible on the food items. If it is something like fruit then you should make sure that you do not buy one that is overripe. If you will not be using it for a few days then you can see if you can even buy one that is not quite ready yet. Also, do not overbuy so that the food gets older until it spoils. You can always go back and buy more.
Food spoiling is like throwing away money, and no one wants to do that. Consider the above tips to help you reduce this wasteful activity.
