Malware Identity Theft

Online auction sites such as eBay can provide amazing deals. Unfortunately, scores of people also get scammed each and every day on these websites. There are steps that you can take in order to avoid becoming a statistic and losing your money.
Choose reputable sellers
There is no way for you to know for certain that a seller is reputable, but there are certain clues. Many of these websites allow prior buyers to leave feedback. Someone who has a lot of great feedback is more likely to be reputable than someone with little or no feedback. Of course be wary of anyone with bad feedback.
Another way that scammers get a lot of good feedback is by selling small things and following through. Suddenly they offer a big ticket item and that is the scam. Go into the feedback and make sure that the other items are similar in value to what you are purchasing. For instance, you may be wary if someone has 100 good reviews on $1 pens and is now selling a $20,000 diamond necklace.
Look for warning signs
There are different warning signs that could indicate a scammer. If someone demands immediate payment with a money order, for instance, then this could be a sign that something is not right. Most people will allow for payment by other options. Of course it does not mean that it is not real, but it just means you should be looking out for other signs that there is a problem.
Is it too good to be true?
You find an amazing deal. A $10,000 diamond necklace is being unloaded for only $1,000. The person has no feedback and is demanding immediate payment with cash. Is this too good to be true? Probably. You may find that no one else has bid on it because everyone is afraid that it is just a scam.
There are great deals to be had on online auction sites, and it can be sometimes difficult to distinguish these from scams. However, you need to be on the lookout for deals that seem just too good to be true. Why would someone sell something for far less than it is worth? If they could get three times the amount at a local pawn shop, they why not sell it there?
Protect yourself with your form of payment
Even if you do get scammed on an online auction site, you can still protect yourself and your money based on the form of payment that you make. For instance, you are much more protected if you use a credit card that allows you to charge back fraudulent claims as compared to sending a money order. A lot of action websites allow payment through a service such as Paypal that gives an added layer of protection. It also allows you to avoid giving your credit card number and other payment or personal information. In this way you are only vulnerable for the value of the item and do not need to worry about them breaking into your bank or credit card account.
Scams do exist in online auction sites, but with the proper precautions you can avoid most occurrences. The above tips can help you protect yourself.
