How large is it?
Of course you want a tablecloth that will fit your table well. It is important that it not be too short. You do not want it to not cover your entire table. Of course you also do not want one that is so long that it interferes with people putting their legs under the table. How much it drapes over will be a personal preference. How resistant to stains is it?
Some tablecloths are much more resistant to stains. Some that look like cloth are made of special material so that liquids will bead on them and then wipe off. Some will absorb the stains much more fully. You will need to think about the characteristics of your family such as whether you have kids to decide how resistant it needs to be.
How does it clean?
Some tablecloths are much easier to clean than others. Some may be made of vinyl and with a wet paper towel you can clean off most stains. Others are easily machine washable. Others are a little more difficult to clean, so you should think about how dirty it is likely to get in your home, how often you will want to clean it, and how much time you have to do so.
What is the look?
Different tablecloths have much different looks. Some are much more elegant such as a snow white tablecloth whereas others are earthy and some are just fun. Think about how you want your dining room to look.

You do not want something that will completely clash with its surroundings. Think about both the room as a whole as well as your dishes and other items that may be on the table.
What is the price?
Tablecloths cost far different amounts of money. It is not even that the most expensive is the best. Price around if you are budget conscious.
