It is a challenge indeed when you are a grandparent who has to deal with adult children who continue to have children that end up in your care. This is obviously not the typical way of things, and there are a variety of strategies to try to address the situation.
Everything will of course depend on the situation and why the children are being placed in your care. A situation where the parent does not want to care for the child is very different from one in which he or she is not suitable, thus these shall be addressed separately.
For those situations in which the parent does not want to care for the child, then you might want to start out by talking to your child. You may want to find out what is exactly going through their mind. They may need some help to get themselves together and then feel like they can take the child.
For those situations where the children are taken from the parent, you might be able to also help address the situation. If it is because of a problem such as a drug addiction, then you can try to get your child help by getting him or her into some sort of program. Perhaps you can help your child attend parenting classes if you think it would be of use. They may want money from you, but just handing them some is often not the best way to go. If they need help finding a job or getting some skills to work, then you could help them achieve that. Sometimes getting them involved in a religious organization can help them straighten themselves out as well.
Unless there is court ordered visitation allowing or disallowing the natural parent from seeing the child, then you may have the child see him to her. You may want to help foster a healthy relationship between the two of them if at all possible.
You might also want to discuss the fact that your child continues to have children. You can talk about the burden and how it is unfair. You can discuss the different options of birth control, and why it is important to avoid pregnancy if they are just going to give the child to your care.
It is difficult dealing deal with adult children who continue to have children that end up in your care. The above techniques may help you in these situations.
