Best Practices for Preventing Tooth Decay in Children

Tooth decay is not just an adult disease. Even children get it, and it can lead to painful dental procedures that no one wants for their children. The following practices can help prevent tooth decay.
Limit sugary items
When children eat a lot of sugary items as kids are likely to do if allowed, then they can get more tooth decay. Foods like candy, cake, ice cream, soda and other sugary sources can be very bad for the teeth. It is especially important to clean your teeth right away after having these items.
Brush teeth
It is amazing how much simply brushing your child’s teeth can do to help prevent decay. If they are very young and you worry that they will swallow the toothpaste, then you should get a training toothpaste that does not contain fluoride. If they are older, you can get a child’s toothpaste with fluoride. You might want to consider one of the more natural ones that does not contain food dye. You should brush your child’s teeth in the morning, and before they go to bed so that they do not go to sleep with food on their teeth the entire night. Even juice can cause a problem for teeth so think about drinking as well as eating. In addition if they have a lot of food or something sweet then you can have them brush again. Choose a soft bristled toothbrush. You will often find ones that are recommended for certain ages.
Take your child for regular cleanings and examinations
By the time your child is two and a half or three they should start to go to the dentist to get regular exams and cleaning every six months. Many choose a pediatric dentist. They can check for any tooth decay and tell you the steps to take if your child is showing signs. They will also clean your child’s teeth professionally.
Floss
Even children should have their teeth flossed to get rid of the plaque and food particles that can get trapped between teeth and promote tooth decay. You should try to do this every day.
It is important for you to keep an eye on your children’s teeth. You should look in their mouths as you are brushing for any signs of tooth decay or black spots. If you see anything that bothers you or if they complain about their teeth, then you should take them to the dentist immediately. They may have the beginning of tooth decay, and by taking the right steps you can stop it in its tracks.
