You can use crafts to keep an active toddler occupied in a creative and fun endeavor. There are many crafts appropriate for active toddlers. Make sure that you always supervise your child if he or she is using any small pieces that could become choking hazards.
Paper bag puppet
A paper bag puppet is an easy and inexpensive craft that will give your active toddler something fun to play with when he or she is done.
First take a paper bag. You can use one of the plain brown paper bags, or you can look for a white one or one that is another color. The child can then use crayons, paints or markers to make a face and other features on the bag. Make sure to use something that is non-toxic and washable. Your toddler can then add embellishments to the paper bag. If he is under three, then make sure he does not put anything in his mouth. Once he is done making his puppet, you can put on a puppet show together.
Equipment for a sports game
Your active toddler might enjoy creating his own sports equipment. For instance, he can use construction paper to make the “bases” for a baseball game. He can decorate them however he wants and then you can put them on the floor. This can save you money, allow him to use his creativity and leave him with something that can help him get out his energy. It doesn’t cost much and is easy to do. If it gets ruined, he can simply make another.
Pretend play
If your active child loves to engage in pretend play, then let him or her make a craft that will provide a prop for his or her play. For instance, active girls who love to be princesses can make a fairy wand. A thin wooden dowel can serve as the base. Let the child cut out construction paper in the shape of a heart or star (help as needed). She can then glue that to the top and glue on embellishments like different colored yarn.
A craft can allow an active toddler to use his or her imagination. Make sure to tailor the craft so that it is appropriate to the exact age of your toddler.
