(427 Words)
It is heartbreaking to imagine any child suffering through child abuse. Unfortunately, this happens each and every day in the United States and abroad. According to Child Help, every ten seconds, a report of child abuse is made. It happens to children of all different races and across all different economic stations. There are different things that you can do to help these children.
First and foremost it is important to identify any signs of child abuse among children you know. Learn to recognize the symptoms. The child may have unexplained bruises or scars. He or she may be withdrawn or seem very frightened. Some are violent or act out inappropriate behaviors. Of course some will outright share stories of their abuse.
It is important to remember that many children will deny the child abuse because they are afraid of their attackers. The attacker may have threatened him or her with more harm if he or she tells anyone of the abuse. Also remember that not every type of abuse leaves scars, thus you must be on the lookout for any potential signs. If you are a teacher, relative or friend of a child who is showing any of the signs of child abuse, then it is important to get help for that child by reporting it to the correct authorities.
There are different ways you may help a child whom you suspect is suffering from child abuse. If you are in the United States, you can call the national child abuse hotline at 1-800-4-A-CHILD. You can also contact the local authorities in your area, who will be able to direct you to the correct resources. Teachers will typically have a specific avenue to report suspected cases, as will physicians and other people who may recognize the signs. Of course it is also important to keep the child away from the abuser if it is within your abilities and rights to do so.
Of course you should be understanding to any child you know that is suffering from child abuse. Understand the pain he or she may be experiencing. Be patient.
You can also donate to causes that fight against child abuse. For instance, Child Help has programs that include outreach to the homeless, community centers, foster care services, group homes, residential treatment facilities, advocacy centers, and preventative education centers. When you donate, you can help this important cause.
