(431 Words)
Many children learn about the historic events in 1492 in grade school. It is important to teach kids about the important figure in American history responsible for this, Christopher Columbus. A bulletin board is a great way to impart this lesson. Consider the following ideas for such a board.
Make the bulletin board be a picture of the boats of Christopher Columbus.
You can turn your bulletin board into the great blue sea with the boats of Christopher Columbus creating a wide swath. You can use blue construction paper or blue glitter to represent the ocean. You can make your boats out of a variety of different art materials. Of course you can just use construction paper but if you want them to stand out more, you can take a small piece of plywood to represent a wooden boat and some fabric cut in the shape of the sails. You can also use paints to embellish it. You can paint clouds, and birds in the sky. You can show them coming upon America.
Biography of Christopher Columbus
A lot of young schoolchildren know what Christopher Columbus is famous for, but do not really know much about the man himself. You can show pictures and put writing down telling of his life and how he got to where he got. Focusing on his childhood might help children to relate to him better. You can show the steps that led him, and why he made the decisions that he did. You can also talk about what life was like after his historic voyage.
Get the children involved
Get the children to help you put together the Christopher Columbus bulletin board. This can help promote learning and hopefully spark their interest. You can have them draw pictures of his boats, for instance, and then post those up as part of your board. You can also have them write little reports if they are old enough.
Write out the story or a song of Christopher Columbus with illustrations
You can familiarize your children with the basic tale of Christopher Columbus. You can make up a song and write out lyrics to pictures. You can teach the children to sing it and this may work as a mnemonic device. You can also make the bulletin board a comic strip or little story book on what happened.
You are not limited to using one of the above ideas. You can put up pictures of the boats, for instance, along with biographical information about Christopher Columbus. Be creative and use embellishments like stickers of boats or American-themed items.
