(476 Words)
It can be exciting and yet daunting for a teen to go to high school for the first time. There are various things that you can do to help your child prepare physically and mentally for this day. Consider the following strategies.
Make sure that they have all of their necessary supplies
You do not want your teen to be the only one in class who did not get all of the items on the supply list. If one has been given in your school, then make sure that they have the items. You can help them pick out school supplies. They may want products that are much more “adult” than when they were in middle school such as plain colored folders instead of those with children’s characters on them. Make sure that everything is ready so that they are not rushing out on that first day.
Make sure that they are physically prepared
Your teen may have a difficult first day if they did not get enough sleep and/or eat a good breakfast before class. Make sure that they go to sleep at a decent hour. You might want to make them a special breakfast so that they are full.
Talk to them about what to expect
Not all teens will be receptive to this, but if yours is you may be able to talk to him or her about what high school may have in store for them. The environment is much more adult than in most middle schools. You can talk to your child about your high school years, remembering that things may be quite different now. Some things do remain the same, however, and your child may find some of your tales useful. You also want to encourage your child to make new friends and meet new people.
Another thing that your child may face in high school is peer pressure. They may be exposed to other students who are doing drugs, drinking, smoking, have sexual relations and so forth. Of course, this can happen in middle school as well, but you might see it more in the older teens. You want to make sure that you have addressed these issues with your teen so that they are addressed fully.
Go over all logistical information from the school
Many schools will provide a lot of information for the students before school starts. They may find out where their locker is, when lunch time is, school rules, their schedules, etc. You can go over a map of the school to familiarize them with it. If they already have their schedule then you can go over how to get to their classes so they are not wandering around.
You want your teen as prepared as possible for his or her first day of high school. Consider the above methods to aid you in this.
