: How to Find a Roommate in College to Share Housing Expenses

Housing expenses in college can add up quite rapidly, especially for someone who is accustomed to free living at home. Getting a roommate is one way to easily cut down on your costs significantly, often halving it. You will want to be very selective when choosing a roommate, however, because it can be a beautiful thing or the stuff of which nightmares are made. The following are tips on how to find a roommate.
Consider your friends
You will first want to consider your friends in your roommate search. This can be a great way to find someone who you know is safe. You will want to think long and hard before inviting someone to join you, however. Just because someone is a good friend does not mean they will be a good roommate.
First you will probably want someone with similar sleep habits to you if you are going to be sharing the same room. It will not be great if you are an early bird up at 6am every morning but asleep by 10pm and she is a late riser, not up until noon but then staying up until 2am.
Also, consider your lifestyles. If he likes to party all the time and has lots of friends who will come to visit but you like things very quiet and like to study then you might not make great roommates.
Also, strongly consider how clean you each like to keep your home. Consider how you each are at sharing (i.e. if it’s someone who will make themselves more at home with your belongings than you want). If you think it will work out then you can talk to them.
Ask around to see if anyone knows of someone
You may be able to find a roommate through someone else. You can ask your friends whom you trust if they know of anyone who might be interested in such a deal. You can ask them about their habits such as those listed above to make sure they would be a good fit. You should also talk to them extensively. Both of you should be comfortable with the arrangement.
A third way is to find someone you don’t know. The college may have a matching service and some people even put their names in ads. Be VERY careful when doing this, however. You want to get someone who is safe and won’t steal from you.
A roommate can be very helpful with the bills. Consider the above methods of finding one when you are in college.
