Choosing a long-term care solution for an aging loved one is a challenging task, and a vital one. Many factors must be balanced, including a budget, the loved one’s preferences and your abilities. Consider the following tips for making this selection.
Consider the possible solutions
Before deciding which solution would be best you should think about which ones are feasible. Some of the more common solutions include:
* The loved one moves in with you or another relative. They could stay with you full time or they could go somewhere during the day such as an adult day care center. You could hire someone to assist all or part of the time.
* The loved one moves to a senior living center, assisted living facility or nursing home depending on his or her mental and physical needs. You will find many different places that offer such services at different price points and with different features.
* The loved one remains in his or her own home with someone such as an aide with them some or all of the time to provide assistance.
Consider the budget
You will need to think about what you can realistically afford. If you simply do not have the money to have them stay in their own home with a full-time companion, then you do not need to consider that option. Also, consider that a long-term solution may be years. You want to be careful about starting something that will not be sustainable for long. Of course their needs may change as time goes on.
Consider what is feasible
You will need to decide what can be physically and mentally possible for you. For instance, even if you want the loved one to live in your home this may not be possible. Let’s say you work and have three young children and a loved one who has Alzheimer’s Disease and requires full-time care. You may just not be able to provide that.
Find the best possible solution given the limitations
Now you should have list of solutions that are within your budget that are feasible. You need to think about what would be best for your loved one. Take into account their desires. If they are competent, then you should talk to them and let them make the decision in their care; if they are not, think about what they would have wanted.
You will want to do your research at this time. If you decide that an assisted living facility is the best option, then do not just pick the first one that you see. Visit different facilities and try to find recommendations to find one that will be the best.
It can be difficult to find a long-term solution for your loved one, but with time and effort it can be done. Use the above tips to aid you in this task.
