: Why a Dogs Behavior may Change when their Owner is Present
:
(413 Words)
A dog may behave completely differently when its owner is around compared to when it is without him or her. The following are reasons why this may be the case.
The dog will take cues from the owner’s demeanor
A dog will often look to its owner to ascertain whether there is a threat or not. They may look to see how he or she acts around another person. If the owner appears threatened by a person, then their natural instincts might kick in that they need to protect their owner and they may start to hiss and growl and even attack. If the owner acts like you are a friend then they may understand that and treat you kindly as well. There are many dogs that are generally friendly unless they perceive a threat. For instance, they may be acting nice around you until the owner comes and starts to act differently. They can also have as big a change if they are acting aggressive towards you but then sees the owner as calm.
The dog will often listen to its owner’s commands
Many owners can command the dog to act a certain way. If the dog is acting one way but then the owner comes and starts to command it to do something else, then its behavior may change. For instance, if it is barking at you and about to attack but then the owner comes out and yells at it to stop or back off, then it likely will (hopefully). If they are very excited and jumping around, then the owner might be able to yell at it to sit. Different owners have more or less influence on their animals.
The owner may calm down or excite the dog
Sometimes dogs can have different emotions around their owner. They may be nervous about something but then when their owner comes they may feel comforted and calm down, even if the owner does not say or do anything. Likewise a lot of dogs are very happy to see their owners. They may act calm when he or she is not there, but then when they come home they may jump up and down and get very excited.
A dog’s behavior can change in a matter of moments when the owner is present. You may want to make sure that you are with the owner until you know how the dog will act. The above reasons are why these changes may occur.
