The best Pets to Teach Children Responsibility
A great way to teach children responsibility is to get a pet. Different animals will teach different lessons to the children and require different amounts of work. The following are some of the best pets to teach this lesson.
Fish
A great starter pet to teach kids responsibility is a fish. There are many reasons for this. First, a fish is very inexpensive. Even in this difficult economy, most people can afford this. Next a fish can go into the child’s bedroom, which might help the child feel more responsible for it. A fish is also great because it is good for a young child. Even small kids can learn to feed a fish. You wouldn’t want a three year old taking your dog for a walk late at night, however they can put a few pinches of food into a tank. It is also good because it teaches responsibility while not taking a lot of time. A lot of kids are very busy and might simply not have the time to care for an animal that requires a lot more like a dog. Also, most fish are not a long time commitment because their life spans are usually not that long.
Dog
Of course dogs are one of the most common pets used to teach children responsibility. First they are great because so many kids want one. Many of the kids are willing to do the work for them because of how much they want them. Dogs do require a decent amount of work, although some more than others (i.e. if you have a yard you might not need to take them for walks). Your child can learn that they still need to take care of the dog even when they are busy or have other things because it is a creature looking up to them. They can also see the rewards of fulfilling their responsibilities by having an animal that shows them affection.
Cat
A cat can be a great animal to teach a child responsibility. They take more work than a fish but might not take up quite as much as a dog. Some are very sweet with children.
A pet can be not only a companion to a child, but also a great way to teach him or her responsibility. Of course the age of your child will play a big part, but you might want to consider the above pets when deciding which one to get.
