How to Improve the Health of your Entire Family

(391 Words)
Eating the right foods will keep you at an ideal weight, lower your risk of disease and keep you looking and feeling great. This is important for every member of the family, from the youngest to the oldest. It is great when a family decides to eat healthier together. There are certain steps that you can take to make this happen.
Purge your pantry and fridge
“Out of sight, out of mind” is a good rule to live by when it comes to unhealthy food, and this is especially true for children. If junk food is not in the house, you won’t be tempted to reach for it.
You should get rid of foods that contain empty calories, such as candy, cake, dessert, potato chips and fried foods. While you’re at it, don’t forget to purge unhealthy beverages. A lot of people sabotage their diets with too many high-calorie drinks. Get rid of sugary drinks such as fruit punch and lemonade. Limit how much alcohol you drink, as well as juice and even diet soda, which tends to be high in sodium.
Keep healthy snacks on hand
Since you will be getting rid of the unhealthy food, you want to replace it with healthy food that family members can snack on when they get hungry. There are many such foods. Cut up carrot or celery sticks and keep them within easy reach in the fridge, or keep foods on hand that are filling but have little to no calories, such as plain rice cakes or healthy popcorn.
Plan ahead
Take the time to plan healthy meals that the entire family will enjoy. Sometimes it is just a matter of simple replacement. Buy whole wheat pasta instead of regular pasta. Instead of serving macaroni and cheese that has tons of calories and saturated fat, serve pasta with a healthy marinara sauce instead. Involve the entire family in making the meal plan so that everyone can pick something they enjoy.
Try to spend family mealtime together to model good habits for your children. Avoid going out to eat as much as possible, since you’re more likely to blow your diet at a restaurant than if you prepare food at home.
Make a commitment to eating healthy, and share this with your entire family. Soon everyone will look forward to cooking and eating healthier.
