Techniques for Developing Music Appreciation in Young Children

(400 Words)
Even young children can learn to have an appreciation for music. Parents can take many steps to foster this appreciation, and great importance resides in simply exposing the child to music. Try the following techniques with your kids.
Turn your home into a symphony
Your children cannot learn to appreciate music if they never listen to it. You may want to make it a habit to have music playing in the house as much as possible. You can even get your child his or her own little music player. They make some that are specifically made “kid-tough” for little kids.
You may want to let your child listen to a wide variety of artists. Remember that your child may not like exactly what you like so let them understand that there are many different types. You can play appropriate contemporary music for them, show tunes, children’s music and more. Let them tell you what they like.
Children can also watch music in videos. Put on videos for them that incorporate music such as Mary Poppins. You can encourage them to dance.
Take them to a concert
Your child may learn even more about music if you take them to an actual concert. Some are specifically for children or you can take them to an adult one if you think that they would sit through it. You can talk to them about the music and ask them what they like about it.
Enroll them in music lessons
Even very young children can learn to play an instrument. For the tiniest of kids, you may just get toy instruments for them to play around with. Do it with them and have fun. You can then let them learn how to play an instrument such as the violin or piano. You will find many private and group lessons. They may also like to learn how to sing. You can encourage them to join the band at school or sing in the school concerts.
Music is a beautiful part of life, and you want your children to appreciate it. You can also talk to them about it, teaching them about some of the famous musicians and composers. Some singers are children themselves, and they may become interested if they learn about them. Use a variety of techniques to cultivate your child’s interest in music and you may have the next Mozart on your hands.
