There are many reasons why you might want to have children that are close in age and many reasons why you might not want to. Different ways are for different people, and there are a number of factors that could influence the choice. The following advantages and disadvantages should be considered when deciding how to space your children.
Advantages:
Your children might have an easier time playing with each other because they are on the same level
It might be easier for you children to play together as peers because they are close in age. For instance, they might be interested in the same types of toys and activities at the same time. Many games, activities, attractions, shows and other items geared for children are geared for certain age ranges. The closer your children are in age, the more likely they are to match in these. Also if one is much older, sometimes they do not want to play as much with the younger one because they feel that they are too “babyish” for them. It might be easier for them to converse if they are much closer to being true peers.
You might be done sooner
If you just have your children boom boom boom and then are done you might be done sooner then if you spaced them out more. A lot of people want to have their children, do all of the kid stuff, but then have some time to themselves when their children are grown. If you have more time in between then you will have young children for a longer time.
Disadvantages:
You might get less one and one time with each child when they are younger
It might be harder to spend quality time with each young child when you have them closer together. You might have two or three kids at home. If you space them out more then the older children might go off to preschool or regular school and then you can focus on the younger children. Many people like having this individual time.
It might be less hectic
It can be very hectic having a lot of young children around. There are many people who have 2 under 2, 3 under 3, or even 4 under 4. Things can be very hectic and difficult for a person. Even a simple trip to the grocery store can be a challenge. If you have more space in between then it might be easier because the older kids are usually easier to handle and can even help with the younger kids.
There are advantages and disadvantages to having children close in age. Consider the above points when considering what is right for you and your family.
