Tips on being a Great Mother in Law

(502 Words)
The stereotypical mother-in-law is overbearing and difficult to handle, however many are warm, caring and a true joy for their children’s spouses. Most women want to be a positive force in their children’s family. Different strategies can turn you into a great mother-in-law.
Respect boundaries
Do not ignore boundaries set by your children and their spouses. If you would not visit a friend without calling first, then do not do it to your child’s spouse. Do not tell him or her that you are coming to visit, but ask when would be a convenient time for them. If he or she has asked something specific such as not to call after a certain time of night, then respect that. India Parenting suggests to give them space. They may not always want you around, but that does not mean that they do not love you.
Refrain from unwanted advice
You may be accustomed to dictating your child’s life, but he or she is grown up. Do not give your advice or opinion on everything unless it is requested. Do not berate or insult them. Let them make their own choices without judgment from you.
Be open to communication
Problems can occur in even the best of relationships, and you do not want them to fester under the surface only to get worse. Make sure that your child and his or her family knows that you are willing to talk to them about any issues between the two of you. Listen when they talk to you and really respond. Likewise if you have a problem, handle it in a mature and direct way.
Help out
Your child’s family may need some help, especially if they have children. Offer to babysit for them so that they can go out. If someone needs a favor such as a ride to the airport then offer your services. Show that you care and want to help them.
Forge a bond with your child’s spouse
Show that you are interested not just in a relationship with your child but in a relationship with their spouse as well. You might treat your daughter-in-law to a night out. Get her something separate from your child at holidays. You want them to feel like a welcome addition to the family, not an interloper who stole your child.
According to Smart Relationship Advice, it is also important not to try to change your daughter-in-law or son-in-law. Even if he or she is not the spouse for which you had hoped for your child, you must accept their choices.
Do not gossip
Do not force your child’s spouse into an uncomfortable position. If you are mad at your child, take it out with him, not your daughter-in-law. Do not talk about your child’s past relationships, and do not share secrets. If your daughter-in-law confides in you, do not betray her.
With the right moves, you can be a great mother-in-law. You will form a wonderful bond with your child’s family that will benefit everyone.
