Choosing a Nanny for a Baby
Choosing a nanny is an extremely important decision. This person will care for your child and be responsible for his or her safety and well-being. It is vital to find someone who is well-qualified, responsible and competent. Take the right steps to find a reputable nanny.
Find someone you know
The best way to find a nanny is to tap into someone you know, if at all possible. If you know someone responsible who is looking for a job as a nanny, then talk to them about the position. Also consider people who are very good with your child who are looking for a job. Perhaps there is a babysitter who would like a more comprehensive position. You may know someone without even realizing it. It would be even better if the baby is familiar with the person already.
Secure a recommendation
If you cannot find someone you personally know, then look for a recommendation. Ask around to people you know who have used nannies in the past, especially if you have seen the person in action. If your friends do not know someone personally, then they still might be able to get a recommendation. If you cannot get an actual recommendation, then you can ask whether anyone has used an agency that they trust.
Look at agencies and on-line classified ads
Agencies can be a great way to find a nanny because they pre-screen candidates. Many of them conduct background checks, which would provide you with peace of mind and save you the cost of doing one yourself. The exact measures the agencies take ranges, however, so make sure you find out exactly how thorough each is. Babycenter also recommends looking at classifieds on-line, but you have to be careful because you will have to do your own background research.
Conduct interviews
Conduct a thorough interview with each candidate. Go in with a list of exact questions. Ask about each candidate’s background, experience and references. Talk to them about the details of their past experience with babies. You might also want to watch them handle your baby.
Research references
It is important to check references to make sure that the potential nanny is being truthful. If the agency didn’t already conduct a background check, then you can do that as well. Look for anything that could possibly be a red flag.
Give it a try
Before signing the nanny on full-time, consider having her babysit once. There is nothing wrong with setting up a “nanny-cam” so that you can see what goes on when you are not home. If you are happy with her performance, then you can hire her full time.
Hiring a nanny is a time-consuming yet important job. Take the time and effort to make sure you get someone who will care for your baby in a responsible manner.
