: Adopting a Green Approach to Laundry
:
(406 Words)
Do you want to help take care of Mother Earth? Going green is a great way to accomplish this, and you can take this approach when doing your laundry. There are a variety of steps to take to accomplish this.
Get energy efficient machines
Many people stick to their old washing machines, certain they are saving money by not purchasing another. Ironically, they may actually save money and help the environment instead by buying a new machine. The newer washing machines are far more energy efficient than the older ones, often utilizing less electricity and less water. You can buy a front loader, which does not fill the entire basin with water as a top loader might. You will have to heat up far less water. These machines can save you money and help the environment.
Clean with cold water
You can also save on electricity by using cold water instead of hot or warm water. Of course there are times you need to use the warmer settings, but try the cold first to see if it works. In a lot of cases this is sufficient.
Put in full loads
The less loads of laundry you do the less resources you use and the better for the environment. Try as much as possible to fill your loads up completely. If you have just a few items you may even want to hand wash them and save yourself a complete load of laundry and the energy it uses up.
Hang dry
You can save the energy usage of your dryer all together if you hang on a line. You might especially want to do this if you have just a few items.
Use green products
Of course this is one of the most important things you can do when trying to adopt a green approach to doing the laundry. For instance, you can use Seventh Generation Natural Laundry Detergent with Non-Chlorine Bleach, Free & Clear Powder by Seventh Generation. This boasts itself as non-toxic, biodegradable and not tested on animals. This company has a number of green cleaning products that may be better for the environment than some of the more mainstream laundry products. You can do Internet research to find out how green your current products are.
Taking a green approach to your laundry can help the environment, your wallet and you. The above methods are just a few of the ways you can accomplish this.
