Appropriate Conversation Topics on a first Date

There are certain things you can talk about on a first date, and some things that you most definitely do not want to bring up, such as the statement above. You may be more comfortable with the following conversation topics.
Your job
One fairly safe area is to talk about your job. This is a large part of what you do in your daily life, and the person may be truly interested in it. You usually cannot offend the person too much by talking about your career. If you have an interesting job or have similarities to what they do, then this can be an even better topic. Of course do not go on and on so that they get bored. Listen as they tell you about their job as well.
Your family
A lot of people like to talk about their family on a first date. You may talk about your siblings. Try to keep positive about things. Many people judge whether they can have a relationship with someone based on how that person has a relationship with others. If you tell them that you “hate your parents’ guts” then they may be less than impressed.
Interests
You want to find out whether this person could potentially be right for you. Oftentimes successful couples have a lot of interests in common. You can talk about yours to see if you have things in common. For instance, if you just love sports, then you can talk about a sports team. Again, do not continuously talk about something in which they are clearly showing no interest. If you find a topic of shared interest, then this can be a great thing to expand upon.
A great experience
If you did something exciting such as went on a fun cruise or went mountain-climbing then this can be something to talk about on a first date. They may be excited about something that you did like that. If you have been to interesting places around the world, then you can talk about the different cultures. Listen to them as they tell you about their experiences.
Of course sometimes what will be appropriate will depend on where you met the person. If you met them at a political club meeting, for instance, then this can be a good topic of conversation, but otherwise politics is probably not a great idea. The above subjects are fairly innocuous for the discussion on a first date.
