It is important to find a skilled swimming instructor for your child. This is the person who can teach your child skills that might literally save his or her life. If possible, it is best not to just pick a name out of a phone book. The following are ways that you might find such an instructor.
Ask for recommendations
You may be able to get a good swim instructor by asking others for recommendations. Try to find someone who has used a swim instructor with a lot of success. You may want to ask them details such as how long it took them to teach their children to swim. You might be able to find someone who has used the same instructor successfully for years with different children. If you belong to a mothers’ club and you have an e-mail loop, then you can send out an inquiry that way. A lot of times the mothers will use the same person so you might be able to find someone whom several people recommend.
In addition to a recommendation from someone you know, you might be able to get a recommendation from someone who is a professional. For instance, if you call up a place that offers swim lessons such as a public pool or county facility, them they might have people who they can recommend. If you go somewhere that has lifeguards, then one of them might do it.
Find someone with training and experience
You want a swimming instructor who knows the correct way to teach a child to swim. Just because you know how to swim does not mean that you know how to teach it. Different swimming instructors might have schooling in this area. It is also great if they are a qualified lifeguard so that if something happens your child might be safer with them.
If your child goes to group classes, you can ask about private lessons
Many people just register their children with a swimming school in a group class. If you like one of the teachers you can inquire with them about private lessons.
When you sign up for private lessons you might want to have your child take a few classes before committing to a lot. See how they do in the classes and how they progress. If you are happy, then continue and if you are unhappy, then look for someone else.
