A new puppy is a wonderful thing and a beautiful addition to the family. You will have many choices when it comes to getting your new puppy, which will have a great influence on what role your dog will play in your family. The following are tips on how to choose a puppy.
Decide what breed you want
Dog breeds vary greatly. One dog may seem so different than another that it might almost seem like a different species! You can get a dog so small that you can hold it with one hand to a dog that can outweigh some adults. What type of dog you want will depend a lot on what you want the dog for. For instance if you want a dog solely to protect against burglars that you can leave in your fenced yard, then you will probably want a big and fierce looking dog that will protect you. If you want a friendly dog that will play with and not overwhelm your two-year old, then you might look for a small and super-friendly dog. If you want one to be a companion to an elderly person, then you might look for one who is calmer and content to relax next to someone. The different breeds differ in size, disposition, aggression, loudness, etc. Think about what you will be using him or her for and choose accordingly. Some dogs are great for several purposes – i.e. as a watchdog and as a “friend.” You can do research on the different breeds through the Internet or the vet. You can also ask friends for recommendations. Obviously, you can get a mixed dog. Definitely pay close attention the size and think about further ramifications such as how much they will eat, etc.
Decide where to go to get your puppy
A great place is the animal shelter. Saving a dog is a wonderful thing to do, and there are many wonderful dogs waiting for someone. You can also purchase a dog from a store or a breeder.
Visit the dogs to see which one meshes with you
Go to the shelter and see which one is right for you. Maybe one will just take on to you. Maybe one will get along with your kids. A lot of times, you will just know when you go to the shelter or store (having your criteria in mind) and the perfect puppy will be there just like he or she was waiting for you.
