2520 Words: 464
You will have a lot of choices when it comes to a college. Each college has its own advantages and disadvantages. There is no one college that will be the right choice for everyone because it will depend on a variety of factors. Look for the following attributes when choosing a college.
A good academic program
Obviously, you are going to want to learn a lot in order to prepare you for your future career and life. You are going to want to feel that they offer good classes taught by good teachers. There are different places where they measure the academics and give ratings of colleges such as Consumer Reports. A lot of times the best way to get a true view of how good the teachers and classes are is to speak to students who actually went there. Furthermore, if you have an idea of what you want to do, then you should look specifically at the academics in that field. Some colleges offer great programs in certain fields but are not as good in others, so you will want to be sure to look at the field(s) that you are interested in. Again, if you can talk to someone in that particular field then that might be useful.
Small class sizes
Some colleges have classes with hundreds of people in them. Others teach classes on television or via the Internet. This may or may not work for you, but in general many people are going to want smaller class sizes. The smaller the class size is, the more personalized attention you will get. They may be able to gear the class better for the individual students if they are not trying to deal with so many students.
A cost you can afford
Colleges range greatly in price. Some of the colleges can literally cost tens of thousands of dollars or more. Others might give generous scholarships or be subsidized by the government. You will want to look for something that you can afford or at least one that you can get enough money from scholarships, grants and loans to cover. You do not want to get your heart set on one that you really will not be able to pay for. Also be careful about putting yourself into major debt when just starting out. If you do choose one that is a lot more money, really look at what you are getting for the extra cost. Some of them really do not give you much better of an education or opportunities despite charging many times the costs of the others.
It is important to choose a college that will allow you to attain your educational goals. Spend the time and effort to thoroughly investigate your choices and make a wise decision.
