Breastfeeding can be a challenge for many mothers, especially first time moms. It can be difficult to know how to do it correctly, and if you are not careful, you might end up with backaches. You should be able to avoid these, however, if you take the necessary steps. The following are tips on how to prevent backaches when breastfeeding.
Learn the correct holds
There are many good holds for holding a baby while breastfeeding. Some work better than others for different people. You should take the time to learn these correct holds and what works for you. A lactation consultant may be able to help you learn how to hold the baby correctly. If you go to a breastfeeding support group such as Le Leche League, then they might be able to help you with this as well. Many times we have back problems when we doing things incorrectly.
Don’t hunch over the baby in an uncomfortable position
Some of us will hunch over in order to breastfeed in an admittedly uncomfortable position. Do not do this. You should not have your back at an awkward angle while you are nursing.
If it hurts, try something else
If your back hurts while you are breastfeeding, then you should try a different position, even if you are technically doing it right. For some reason, it might be putting bad pressure on your back. There are many choices that you have when it comes to holds, so why do the one that hurts your back? You could even have the baby next to you lying on the bed while you nurse, which might help some people.
Use a breastfeeding pillow
There are different breastfeeding pillow meant to make it easier to nurse and to take the pressure off of your back. My Breast Friend is an extremely good one. Other people just use the Boppy pillows. You can put these on your lap and it will raise the baby to a good height so that you are not leaning over the baby and hunching down, which might promote back pain in some people.
Put your feet up on a stool or ottoman
Many people find that they are more comfortable if their feet are up on stools or ottomans. This might help take some of the pressure off of their back.
Seek advice from a physician
If you are really having a problem, your physician might be able to help you. You may want to try different techniques in order to help yourself prevent back problems while breastfeeding.
