2633 Words: 479
It is very important to choose a quality nursing home. It will determine the quality of life of your loved one. Many nursing homes are good, but unfortunately, a lot are lacking and some are even neglectful of their residents. You will want to spend the time to truly consider the nursing homes, and make sure you have a good view of what it is truly like before placing someone there. Remember, the resident might not have the capacity to tell you if something is wrong. The following are things to look for when choosing a nursing home.
The workers are courteous, respectful and caring to the residents
Obviously, you are going to want your loved one to be well cared for. Some workers at nursing homes are wonderful with the residents, and show them respect and are gentle with them. Others might have the job because it is what they can get, and they might be rough or even abusive with the elderly residents. You will want to spend some time in the nursing home to observe how the residents are treated. Do not just go by what the nursing home tells you – obviously, they are going to say the best things about themselves. Also, you may want to spend a little time there. When someone is watching, they may be on their best behavior, but that does not mean that the conditions are the same once eyes are averted. Look for any person who might be a problem when you are not looking.
The surroundings, beds and chairs are comfortable
You will want your loved one to be comfortable. They may spend the rest of their lives in the same surroundings, so you are going to want to make sure that it will be as pleasant for them as possible. Different nursing homes may purchase different furniture or other items that might make it more or less comfortable. You also might want to consider outside areas or other things that might make it more pleasant for your loved one.
The food is good
If your loved one is able to eat regular food, you may want to see what it is like. Food may be one of the few things some of them can still enjoy, and you want to make sure that it is edible and hopefully good.
There are enrichment activities for your loved one
Different nursing homes may offer different enrichment services for the residents. Obviously, not everyone in a nursing home might be up to such, but for others this might be of utmost importance. They may have shows, singing, bring in different groups, have visitors, etc. Look for things that could really make a difference to your loved one.
A good nursing home can make all the difference for your loved one. The above criteria can help you make this selection.
