47 Words: 7 Nutrition Tips best and Worst Breakfast Cereals

2386 Words: 431
Not all breakfast cereals are created equal. Some of them are far unhealthier than others. The unfortunate thing is that some of the cereal manufacturers have gone out of their way to try to make a cereal seem healthy when it is not, by deeming it a “smart choice”. There are smart choices out there, but it isn’t the manufacturer’s biased opinions you should listen to but instead the objective nutrition label. You should be looking for a decent amount of calories, low sugar, low or no fat (especially saturated or trans) and low sodium. The following are some of the best and worst breakfast cereals.
Worst:
You may love those sweet cereals, but your body doesn’t. The worst cereals are those that are loaded down with a lot of added sugar. You can often guess at these cereals – those such as frosted flakes and apple cinnamon cheerios. A lot of the chocolate cereals and cereals with marshmallows have an unhealthy amount of sugar in them. They are only now just realizing how bad for you sugar truly is. These super-sweetened cereals affect your blood sugar and may make you more likely to get diabetes in the long run since that is tied in to the amount of sugar you consume.
Best:
The best cereals do not have to be tasteless, and many of them are even sweet, just not loaded down with sugar. Cheerios is a very popular cereal for little kids and is relatively healthy. Clifford Crunch is very tasty and also good for you. Even Life cereal does not have a ton of sugar in it. There are many organic cereals that provide whole grains and are even healthier for you. These can be found at health food stores and departments.
A lot of times you can make your own healthier versions of items. For instance, let’s say you love raisin bran. Instead of getting the one where they coat the raisins in sugar, you can get a healthier cereal like Total and add some raisins to it. This can be a much healthier alternative.
When deciding on a breakfast cereal, again remember to read labels. Some people may think that if something has fruit in it, then it is good for you but this is definitely not always the case. It is not typically fresh fruit, and if that fruit is covered in sugar the overall unhealthiness of the cereal can backfire on you. You can read up on the latest nutritional guidelines to find out exactly what will work for you and your dietary needs.
