Worst Diet Fads and Trends

With obesity numbers skyrocketing, more Americans than ever are looking to lose weight, and to do so fast. It may seem as if there is a new diet every day, and some of them catch on and become fads. Unfortunately, many of these diets are unsustainable, unhealthy and even dangerous. One should avoid the following diet fads and trends.
Atkins diet
Those on the Atkins diet skip carbohydrates but load up on proteins – no matter whether they are healthy or unhealthy. The Atkins diet may seem effective in the short term, but most find it unsustainable. They simply cannot stay away from bread and pasta for that long. It also ignores the fact that there are carbohydrates that are healthy for you.
What the Atkins diet allows you to have is as bad as what it does not allow you to have. It encourages red meat, which is extremely high in saturated fat. You are allowed to have a lot of food that is extremely unhealthy for cardiovascular health.
The general gist of the diet is that a lot of people cut down on the calories because so much foods is forbidden. Limiting bad carbohydrates is a good idea and can help you lose weight, however the Atkins diet is neither healthy nor effective in most long-term scenarios.
Slim Fast/Meal replacement drinks
A variety of companies offer meal replacement drinks such as Slim Fast. The idea is that you drink a meal instead of eating. This may seem easy, but it leaves a lot of people feeling unsatisfied, thus they just cheat and eat others foods.
Skipping meals
Unfortunately, one of the most common diet trends is to simply skip meals in order to lose weight. This can be very dangerous because it can lead to eating disorders such as anorexia. You may always feel hungry and be very uncomfortable. In addition, when one skips meals, their metabolism may slow, making it more difficult for them to lose weight. They may gouge themselves when they cannot stand it any longer because they did not learn how to eat correctly.
Diet Pills
You can scarcely open a magazine without seeing an advertisement for a diet pill that offers weight loss without exercise, dieting or any other work except a tiny pill. Many of these are just fads and even worse scams. Some are dangerous. They may just cause you to lose water weight. Most are simply ineffective.
There are some great diets out there, but there are also many fads and trends that are dangerous. The above diets are some best avoided.
