The seasons are a fun and exciting concept for young children. There are many different things that you can do in order to help preschoolers learn about these four different times of year. The following are some tips for teaching preschoolers about the seasons.
Have them do a craft for every season
One fun thing to do would be to have the children do one or more crafts for the different seasons. For instance, when it is the winter, you could have them make a snowman out of cotton. In the fall, they could make their own cornucopia. In the summer, they could take a seashell and decorate it. In the spring, you could have them cut out paper to make different types of flowers. You will find many different crafts that relate to the seasons in different ways. This will help teach them about the different things that are associated with each of the seasons (i.e. it snows in the winter in many places, there are flowers in the spring, etc). Make sure that you tailor the craft to their young ages. You may have to do part of it either for or with them.
Have them draw pictures of the different seasons
Another fun hands-on activity that can help teach preschoolers about the seasons is to have them draw pictures to represent the different seasons. They can do a series of these based on different topics. One thing is that you could have them draw a picture of the weather when it is the particular season. Thus you would be looking for snow in the winter and a sun in the summer. They could draw whatever they wanted as long as it could make sense to tie it back to the season. Another one would be to have them draw a picture of an activity you would be doing in this season. Thus they may put sledding or skiing in the winter, raking leaves in the fall, splashing in a pool in the summer and picking flowers in the spring. Many kids this age cannot actually draw pictures that look like these things to others but they can do the best they can and draw them that way for themselves. Make sure that you do not give them something that is too complicated for them.
It is fun for preschoolers to learn about the seasons. Consider the above tips when teaching these lessons.
