The experience needed for this type of position is going to vary by job, but there are certain commonalities you will often find. Experience as a delivery driver
Some companies are only going to want to hire people who have had the exact type of experience to match the job for which they are now applying. For instance, a pizza delivery place might be looking for someone who has driven and delivered pizzas before for a different company. Some of them will just want that you have worked as a delivery driver before but not care as much what you did it for. Again, this will depend on the job.
Experience as a safe driver
Many companies that employ delivery drivers are going to look to see what kind of driving record you have. They are going to want to make sure that you have experience as a safe driver. If you are driving a truck as part of your position, then they might look for specific experience driving a certain type of truck (of course, you will also need a special license for a lot of trucks). Some places will have specific rules as far as the tickets or accidents that you could have been in. They also might have wanted you to have driving in your past jobs, even if you were not a delivery driver.
Experience dealing with people
Delivery drivers will usually deal with people at some point – when they are delivering the items. A company might want them to have experience at dealing with people. In a lot of cases the delivery driver is the face of the company – he or she might be the only person that the customer ever sees from the company. This is often the case with deliveries from a pizza place where a lot of people only call up. They might want someone who can show positive experience of dealing with different people.
