Children who grow up eating healthy are more likely to continue to do so as they age. It is an important lesson to instill in young children. Many parents resort to lecturing, but this can have mixed results and can even backfire in rebellious children. The following are some ways that parents can get children to eat healthier without lecturing to them.
Eat healthy themselves
A lot of times the best way that children learn is by emulating what their parents do. If the child sees the parent eating a lot of unhealthy food then they are likely to do so as well. They learn that this is the way to eat. If they see the parent eating healthy on the other hand, then it will just become second nature that these are the foods that you eat. Many children like to act grown up and copy their parents. By showing them that you eat healthy they might be likely to follow.
Serve them healthy food
At some point, children will eat what they are served. They cannot eat unhealthy if all of the food put in front of them is healthy. Make it that healthy food is what is on the menu every day and this is what they will learn to eat. Don’t forget to make the snacks healthy as well. When you go out make sure that you eat healthy foods since many foods out are unhealthy. If they are going out with different adults such as grandparents, you might want to instruct them of the healthy foods that they should be eating. Obviously, you will not be able to avoid every instance of unhealthy food – you don’t want them to be the only kids left out of the school pizza party – but if you can have healthy food as a general rule, they will grow to eat this more and hopefully like it.
Do not have unhealthy food in the house
If you have candy, cake and other junk food the children are more likely to have it. They will see it. If it is not in the house, then they are not going to eat it. You should try as much as possible to avoid having these in the house. If you like a little now and then, then you can keep it hidden and eat it after the children go to bed.
It is important for children to learn to eat healthy and lecturing isn’t always the best way. Consider the above strategies to help you with this.
