Working from home is a dream for many and a reality for an increasing number in this age of technology and new forms of communication. Working from home is wonderful in many respects, providing people with flexibility and comfort not seen in most offices. Working at home can also have its challenges, however, for you may have to be the one to motivate yourself. There will be no boss hovering nearby, no other employees watching you as you work diligently. There are things you can do in order to increase your productivity while working from home. The following are tips for doing so.
Limit interruptions
Interruptions can be the bane of productivity. It is difficult to keep focus when the phone is ringing, new e-mail is arriving and texts are coming. As much as possible you want to limit these interruptions. If it is feasible, turn off your phone; if not then only answer vital phone calls. Ignore all but the most important e-mails. As much as you can, try to stay on task. Usually when we have an interruption, we stop working for far more time than is the actual interruption. It can take a little while to get back into the work and get your focus back. You can also tell people who are not related to your work to contact you outside of your working hours.
Limit distractions
In addition to limiting interruptions, you should try to minimize things that distract you. For instance, some people may have the television on in the background. Unless your work is absolutely mindless, this is usually a bad idea because you may not work as quick and get as much done. You might not even realize that you are listening to it with half an ear. You may want to limit other things that would distract you.
Make specific times for working
You may find it easier to be more productive if you work for a certain amount of time. For many, it takes a while to start working and it can even take some time to prepare to stop. For many jobs (but not all) you will be more productive if you do a certain amount at once and then stop.
Try to focus on your work
As much as possible, focus on your work. Imagine that you are in an office. If you feel your mind wandering, try to bring it back to the work. Some people may find this easiest by making a home office and staying in there while they are working instead of going around the house where they might lose focus.
Try the above tips to increase productivity when working from home.
