: Skills Needed for Armed Security Jobs
:
(500 Words)
An armed security job is not for everyone. Certain skills are commonly required in order to promote success in this important position. The following are some of these skills.
Skill at using a weapon
An armed security guard is not going to be very effective if he or she has no idea how to fire his or her gun. Most of the jobs will require that this be proven. In addition to actually being able to use it (i.e. hitting targets) the potential armed security guard should know when to use it. They should be able to interpret a real threat from an imaginary one. They should not use it prematurely and have a situation that could have had a peaceful resolution end in gunfire and injuries or even death.
They should be skilled at remaining cool under pressure
In an armed security job you may have a difficult situation arise. It may be scary. If you are just going to panic at the first sign of trouble, then you do not have the skills to work in this position. You must be able to stay calm, even if your very life is in danger. Yours might be the life that saves others and people will be counting on you. If you do not think that you can handle this pressure then you should be looking for a job elsewhere.
They should have the skill to notice if something seems wrong
Sometimes a problem will be obvious – a group of bandits will storm a bank with guns. Other times however the threat will be much more subtle, i.e. a normal looking guy hands a bank teller a note that says to hand over $10,000 or he will shoot her with a hidden gun. A skilled armed security guard should be aware of his surroundings and be able to identify the threats that may not be so obvious. He should not be spacing out and he certainly should not be falling asleep. Ideally he would notice the unspoken exchange between the bank teller and the security guard and tell from her facial expression and body language that something is amiss. If the armed security is in a quiet building he or she should be able to identify noises or things that are unusual and indicative of a problem.
Quick reflexes
In an armed security job, you must act quickly. Seconds can literally mean the difference between life and death. You should not sit pondering the best course of action. It should be immediate and hesitation should be nonexistent.
In an armed security job you should try to diffuse the situation as much as possible. A hot temper might only make things worse. They should be good at diplomacy and dealing with people because you might be able to end a problem much better if you are skilled at this.
There are many skills that one in an armed security job should possess. The above points highlight some of these skills.
