Do teachers prefer their salaries or students more? Is all depends on the teacher. There are teachers who prefer one over the other and some who prefer them equally. The following are factors that would influence such a decision.
Why they might prefer their students:
Teachers do not tend to make huge salaries. If you go into a profession solely for the money, then chances are you have not chosen teaching. You can make far more money with a lot of other jobs. In addition, teachers often work very hard with a lot of hours after school. This might not be a great salary to hour ratio, even if they made more than they did. In this way, they may be more interested in the students.
Many teachers go into teaching to inspire students. Teaching is an extremely noble profession. Many teachers truly feel that it is their calling – to help young people reach their potential and start out on life. You can have a huge impact on another person through teaching, and many people see it that way. The rewards from their salary might be low but the intrinsic rewards of a profession such as teaching can be very high. Every time you see a student succeed, that can be a reward.
Teachers often do extra things for which they get no money. Many teachers end up going to after school events or helping out when they get no more money. This shows that they are often dedicated to their students beyond the money. They want their students to know they are there for them even if they are not being paid for it.
They may buy school supplies out of their own pockets. Many school districts are low on funds. A lot of teachers will actually reach into their own pocketbooks to help buy supplies for the children. This obviously shows dedication.
Reasons why they might prefer their salaries:
It is a back-up plan for a lot of people. Some people will get their teaching certification and do it if they have trouble finding another job. In a lot of places, getting a teaching job is not that difficult. In addition, you may not need much more training than your college degree (again this will vary by state). Some people might just be doing it for the ease and might be more interested in the pay than the students. They might not do the extra activities and might just do the least amount of work that they can get away with.
