Many schools are deciding to drop physical education from the school day. For many reasons, this is a very bad idea. They make this decision for money or to have the children prepare for standardized tests, and the true value of physical education is often underestimated. The following are reasons why schools shouldn’t drop physical education from the school day.
Many children grow up to be overweight adults
Many adults are overweight. Being overweight can significantly increase your risks for a wide range of diseases and conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, stroke, etc. Many of these adults are overweight because they do not eat healthy and because they do not exercise. If they had began exercising as children and it just became a habit, then they might be more likely to continue doing it as adults. If schools drop it, then the students might be just less exposed to it and will not understand or think about how important it is to exercise. If its importance is stressed while they are growing up, then they may be more likely to continue doing it as adults. If they drop it and thus show that they do not think of it as important then the children might not understand how important it truly is.
Many children are overweight
Being overweight and obese is not purely an adult condition. Many children are now overweight. Physical education might be able to help keep their weight down. They might burn calories during the class. In addition, the class might motivate them to exercise on their own at home. It can help set them on a healthier course. If physical education is dropped, then they might just be sitting for more of the day.
It is good for the children to get some physical activity during the day
For much of the school day, children just sit down. It can be hard for children to concentrate for that long just sitting down. Children have a lot of energy and it can be beneficial to them to get up and exercise and move around. They might be able to focus better after they have gotten some of the energy out of them. They may be more efficient and even get more done than if they had not taken the break at all. Some of the children might behave better because they do not have as much pent up energy.
