(414 Words)
Even in a recession you can still have a joyful Christmas. Consider the following ideas.
Spend a lot of (inexpensive) time with family
Many people normally spend a lot of money with their families during Christmas. They may splurge for expensive meals out. However, the best part about having family on Christmas is simply spending time with them, and you do not need a lot of money to do that. Instead of splurging at an expensive restaurant, have everyone make something and come over for a pot luck meal. You can have a delicious feast but will probably spend way less. Also think about the activities that you do. You might normally spend a lot on expensive Christmas shows, galas and parties. Instead you can have everyone get together to go to a park. You can go to a community theater or free Christmas concert that won’t hurt your finances further in this economy. Instead of spending a lot of money to see lights at a professional display, walk around your neighbor’s houses and enjoy their individual efforts.
Give great gifts without spending a lot of money
A lot of people find a lot of joy in the giving of gifts at Christmas. Just because there is a recession doesn’t mean that you have to stop enjoying this. You can just try to save money on them. For instance, make some fun handmade gifts. If you have children, they can make something. You will often find that not only are handmade gifts cheaper but they are also often appreciated more than expensive baubles because of the time and effort put into making them. You can also do something like a white elephant gift exchange, and everyone can get a gift but you can save money.
Decorate with handmade decorations
A lot of people feel very joyful with Christmas decorations all around them. A lot of the decorations that are sold are very expensive, however. You may not have the money for that in this recession. Instead you or your children can make fun decorations. There are many great crafts that can be done with construction paper, scissors, glue and some other simple craft supplies.
There are many other small measures that can give you a joyful Christmas even in a down economy. You can enjoy fun and yet free activities like singing carols. You can do volunteer work, which might make you feel better. Try these and the above techniques to enjoy your holiday.
