Traveling by road on Christmas can be quite the endeavor. It can be a great way to enjoy a vacation or a challenge-filled adventure that leaves you saying “never again.” Consider the following Christmas road travel tips.
Give yourself plenty of time
You may be sharing the roads with thousands of your closest friends. With so many people clogging up the roadways, delays can come. There may be accidents, weather issues, slowdowns because of people driving in unfamiliar areas, and so forth. If you have a specific time that you want to be there such as for a Christmas Eve dinner or party, then you want to give yourself plenty of time. Assume that you are going to hit three accidents, a snowstorm, an overturned banana truck, a herd of goats and ten other miscellaneous obstacles on your way.
Drive defensively
It’s Christmas! You should be relaxed, not rushing to thread your way through traffic. Remember that some people will be visiting others in unfamiliar places and they might not be driving as fast as others are. You do not want to have an accident, and driving defensively instead of aggressively can help with that.
Check the weather before you go
You want to know what you are in for. In some areas, Christmastime can be heralded by snow and this might affect how you drive. Make sure that you have all preparations for inclement weather such as snow tires.
Make any hotel reservations well in advance
The hotels might be full right at Christmastime with everyone visiting relatives and going on vacation. Even if you normally make reservations as you go on your normal road trips, for this time you might want to plan ahead and get solid reservations.
Enjoy yourself
It is Christmas, and there is no reason that the time spent on the road can’t be part of the fun. Sing Christmas songs. Play games related to Christmas such as Christmas-themed charades. Put on some festive Christmas music in the car.
You want your Christmas road trip to go well. Of course consider all of the normal traveling trips such as knowing where you are going without needing to fumble with a map while you are driving, bringing food and activities for the kids and stopping if you get tired. Also consider the above tips to help you get the Christmas road trip that you will remember for years to come.
