There are many different games that help people develop critical thinking skills. During these games, people learn to consider a situation and formulate ideas as to what the outcome will be based on their own decisions and moves. These games can be a fun way to learn how to solve problems and make logical choices.
Chess
One of the classic games that teaches critical thinking games is chess. Players have to think about the possible consequences of their moves. They need to try to anticipate the moves that would make sense for their opponents. They also have to think about strategy, making certain moves that might not be advantageous now in order to get in a better situation in the end.
Video Games
There are many different video games that involve role playing. With these games you need to make strategies to go on a quest or fulfill some sort of adventure. You may have to build up your “powers” and buy or sell items. These role-playing games, which are available for all of the major game systems, can be useful to teach critical thinking to children of different ages.
St. Petersburg College identifies a variety of games that teach critical thinking skills including Secrets of the DaVinci: The Forbidden Manuscript, Agatha Christie: Murder on the Orient Express, Echo: Secrets of the Lost Cavern and Myst: 10th Anniversary DVD Edition.
Battleship
Battleship is a game of strategy and trying to figure out what your opponent has planned. You will try to figure out where the ships could be based on where they are not. This is especially good for a young child.
There are many other board games that allow for critical thinking. According to St. Petersburg College, some board games that help students learn critical thinking include Advances Mastermind, Executive Decision Bookshelf Game, CSI: The Board Game and 24 DVD Board Game.
You can also make your own critical thinking games. For instance, you can make a scavenger hunt in which the children have to evaluate clues in order to find out where the next clue is. They may have to solve a problem or come to a conclusion from just these clues.
There are many excellent games that teach critical thinking. For the best results, one should try not one, but a instead do wide variety of these games so that he or she can practice critical thinking in a varied manner.
