You order a meal at a restaurant, and suddenly this gigantic steaming plate of food is before you. For the entire table, you inquire, before realizing that it is only a single meal. It might be great for your pocketbook to get such value but not as great for your diet. Today’s world is certainly super sized and many portions at restaurants are twice, thrice or even more times the amount a typical serving should be. So what to do? The following are some diet tips for a super sized world.
Take food home
Although pretty much everyone has heard of a doggie bag, some people are loath to use them. However, this is a great solution for you. Not only will you not overstuff yourself but you will have some food to eat later. Many of us remember our mothers chiding us to eat everything on our plates. That might be good advice for a recalcitrant child not eating anything at all, but for an adult in today’s super sized world, it can certainly backfire. You should not overstuff yourself. When you are full, you should stop eating. Almost every restaurant (except buffets) will provide you with a doggie bag, which you can then use to take home your food.
Separate the food right away into the portion you will eat now and the portion you will eat later
Some people will just eat and eat if it is on their plates. It doesn’t matter how good their intentions are – when it is in front of you, it might be practically saying “Eat me, please!” One way to get around this to preserve your diet is to separate the food right away. For instance, if you know that half the amount would be a good portion (likely accurate for many restaurants) then you could even ask that half of it be wrapped to go and only get a plate with half of it on it. Otherwise, you can just separate it right when it comes out and either put it aside or ask for a box to put it in. Then you can finish what is on your plate without feeling overfull and destroying your diet.

Some restaurants offer both lunch and dinner sized portions all the time. You might want to see if you can purchase the smaller version. Some restaurants will also have a section for lighter fare.
