: Factors that Affect Attention in Children

:
(401 Words)
Different children have different attention spans. There are many factors that can influence this in a child, including the following.
Genetics
Some children just have better or worse attention spans than others. They may just be more hyperactive and have trouble focusing on one thing. Other children can just naturally pay attention to something for a long time from a young age. Of course, this will range based on the age of the child. In general children increase their attention span as they get older.
Physical and mental well-being
If a child is not getting the proper physical care then he or she might have trouble paying attention. If he or she is hungry, for instance, focusing on something for a long time might prove to be a challenge. If he or she is always tired because they do not get enough sleep then this can be a problem as well. Also if the child suffers from some sort of mental or emotional issue such as depression, then attention span can be affected. It might be affected greatly if the child suffers from attention deficit disorder. There are other physical ailments and learning disabilities such as autism that can play a role.
The atmosphere that the child is in
A child is affected not only by nature, but by nurture as well. If a child has an issue with a low attention span, the parent can work with him or her in an effort to try to help them to focus. For instance, they may spend time reading to them. They may make a lot of quality family time such as dinners together. They may talk to the child about focusing and reward the child when he or she can spends a lot of time on one thing.
Alternatively if the child resides in an atmosphere that is constantly hectic, they may have difficulty learning to focus. If everything around them is always loud and they are always allowed free rein and not strong discipline, then they may not learn the skills in order to focus as they should. This goes for both their home environment and their school atmosphere.
You obviously want your child to have a sufficient attention span so that they can focus in school and at other times. By being aware of the issues that can affect this you might be able to influence and improve it.
